Long Goodbyes?

So wth that I'll surrender;
Leave the critics their recourse,
For the waste baskets yawning
To swallow my thoughts.
For a moments indulgence,
Whose the gift of applause?
And where the words have faltered
Wreaths of wet tissue flowers.
So was it good for you too,
Did I come on too strong?
Did you feel a connection
Or were my cries premature?
I'll take the barb wire kisses;
Signed at the bottom of a dear John,
A blood spotted tourniquet for a crown of thorns.
With a twist of self pity to knot a tie,
A noose that never wore well,
What the profit of lies?
Would you turn out the light dear
Now the candle's wept low,
& throw these tears, while your at it,
On the embers of hope.
The sheets of the page
Where we made our wedding bed;
Did you leave there an answer,
Writ between the battle lines?
Just the stained creases from our final caress.
So now I'm left here to wonder
What was all of it for?
Didn't want to possess
Through the spell of my words.
So as we face another ending,
Are our reflections made clear?
Were all the tears we cried
Just a glass of water we poured?
Just easing the passage of this most bitter of pills.
Do words ever really make love
Because frankly I'm not sure.
Still, I'll find a new beginning
Where the pen comes to rest,
But did you ever wonder too,
Just what was all of it for?
